How to Write a CV That Gets Noticed (Even Without the 'Right' Experience)

Welcome to the second segment of our candidate blog series.
In Section One, we focused on Career Planning and Job Search Strategy, the foundation for any successful career move. Now, in this new section, we’re turning our attention to practical tools and tactics, starting with one of the most important: your CV.
We know how it feels to look at a job description and think, 'I’d be great at this... but I don’t tick all the boxes.' The good news? Employers are looking beyond titles and timelines. The way you tell your story – even without conventional experience – can open doors, if it’s told well... here's how you can start:

It’s tempting to lean on AI tools to write your CV or cover letter. Quick, polished, impressive sounding. But here’s the truth: many AI written applications are starting to look (and feel) the same. They’re smooth, but not personal. Competent, but not compelling. And they often miss what employers really want – a sense of who you are, how you think, and where you want to go.
We’ve been telling our clients that hiring isn’t just about experience anymore. It’s about skills, adaptability, values, and culture fit. We’re helping them look beyond CV checklists – and you can help them do that by showing up as a real person, not a list of buzzwords.
So, what does that mean for your CV?
It means shifting your focus from what you haven’t done to what you bring. Highlight where you’ve learned fast, taken initiative, or delivered impact. If you’ve changed careers, show what skills travelled with you. If you’ve worked in different industries, talk about how that shaped your perspective.
Avoid jargon. Be specific. Use plain language.
Make your achievements measurable where you can – and meaningful where you can’t. Most of all, tell the truth, clearly. Recruiters and hiring managers are scanning hundreds of documents; clarity is your best friend.
And if you’re worried about not having the 'perfect' background, don’t worry! There’s no perfect path anymore. What matters is your mindset, your attitude, and your willingness to learn. Those things come through when you write your CV like someone who knows their own value.
If you're serious about your next move and want to explore what might be possible – even if you're not sure where you fit yet – we’d love to hear from you.
At MDR Consultancy, we work closely with candidates who are ready to grow, contribute, and make meaningful career moves.
