Make Your Business Attractive to Talent: Would you apply for a job at your company?

In our last blog of the series, we looked at why talent shortages happen - the bigger picture, market shifts, and what’s happening beneath the surface when great people seem few and far between.

If you haven’t read it yet, we’ll pop the link below so you can catch up.

This week, we’re moving to a different part of the hiring puzzle: how attractive is your business to the people you really want to hire?

And we’re not talking about shiny logos or office plants here. We’re talking about the deeper stuff - the felt experience of being part of your organisation, from the outside in.

So… would you apply for a job at your company?

It’s a question we often ask our clients - not to be cheeky, but to spark a bit of honest reflection.

If you stumbled across your business as a jobseeker, what would you see? Would you feel drawn in, curious, excited? Or would it feel a bit… unclear? Flat? Generic?

If your answer is a bit of a wince - don’t worry. You're not alone. Many SMEs don’t have in-house recruiters or marketing teams to polish up the employer brand. But that doesn’t mean you can’t compete.

It starts with clarity: Vision, mission, values

Let’s rewind to basics. Do you know where your business is going, what it stands for, and what matters most along the way?

More importantly - do your team and potential hires know?

Candidates now aren’t just looking for ‘a job’. They want to join a business with a clear sense of purpose, direction and values they can get behind.

If your vision, mission and values are buried in a business plan (or worse, still living in your head), now’s the time to bring them out. Shout about them. Live them. Share them. Use them to filter who you attract... and who you don’t.

What do candidates actually experience?

Let’s walk through the candidate journey for a minute - from seeing the job post, to applying, to being interviewed.

  • Is the language in your job ad clear, inclusive and appealing?

  • Do applicants feel respected and informed throughout the process?

  • Are your interviews organised, two-way, and reflective of your culture?

Because no matter how polished your brand might be, if the interview process is clunky or dismissive, it’s game over. Candidates remember how you make them feel, and that reputation travels fast.

Here’s something to think about: when was the last time you reviewed your interview process through the lens of the candidate experience?

Your reputation is your brand

Even if you don’t have a “careers” page or a big LinkedIn presence, your employer brand exists. It lives in every Glassdoor review. Every WhatsApp chat between candidates. Every impression you leave, good or bad.

So - what’s the word on the street about working with you?

You might not hear it directly, but trust us, candidates talk. If people feel ghosted after interviews or unclear about your expectations, that experience becomes part of your reputation - quietly, but powerfully.

Think beyond pay: What else do you offer?

We get it - not every SME can offer London-level salaries. But here’s the thing: that’s often not the deciding factor.

Top candidates are increasingly looking for:

  • Flexibility - not just remote working, but adaptability to real life.

  • Development - will I learn and grow here?

  • Belonging - do I feel like I’d be welcomed and supported?

The best offers are balanced. They show an understanding of what people really value, not just what’s listed in a contract.

If you looked at your own offer from a candidate’s point of view, what stands out - and what’s missing?

You don’t need to be perfect - just intentional

The businesses we see succeeding in this space aren’t necessarily the biggest or the flashiest. But they are thoughtful. They’re intentional about how they show up for candidates. They ask for help when they need it. And they’re willing to change.

That’s where we come in. At MDR Consultancy, we partner with you to uncover what already makes your business great - and how to position that in a way that brings in the right people, with the right mindset, for the long haul.

Need a fresh pair of eyes?

Whether you’re hiring now or planning ahead, we can help you take a step back and assess where the gaps are - and how to fill them.
