Whether you’re interviewing for your very first role or stepping up into something more senior, the reality is: interviews can be nerve-wracking.
And even if you’ve done them before, it’s easy to feel out of practice -especially if your last move was years ago, or an internal step up.
At MDR Consultancy, we support candidates at all stages of their career through this part of the process. We know that performance in an interview doesn’t always reflect capability in the role - so the right preparation matters.
Here we explore how to take a structured, confident approach - whether you’re applying through a recruitment agency or directly.

Start by understanding the job description
The job description is more than a list of tasks (although, we admit, there are a lot that are just that). Written properly, it’s the roadmap of what your potential employer really wants.
Read it thoroughly and ask:
- What’s at the heart of this role?
- What challenges might come with it?
- What kind of person would thrive here?
These clues help shape how you frame your experience and strengths during the interview -and help you decide if it’s truly right for you.
Check the logistics
Don’t overlook the basics:
- Time and format - Is it in-person, virtual or a phone call?
- Tech check - If online, make sure your link works, and your surroundings are quiet.
- Travel - If it’s face-to-face, plan your route and arrive with time to spare.
Being prepared shows you respect the interviewer’s time and helps you stay calm
on the day.
Plan your talking points
You don’t need a script, but you should go in with a few key things ready:
- Examples of your work that show off relevant skills
- Reasons why this company and role appeal to you
- Questions about the role, team or culture
This isn’t just about impressing them - it’s also your chance to check the job is a good
fit for you.
Mindset matters
Interview confidence comes from knowing you’ve prepared well. But it’s also about reminding yourself:
- You were invited to this interview for a reason
- You’re not expected to be perfect
- It’s a two-way conversation, not a test
Deep breaths, a smile and a few minutes of calm before you go in can really help.
And remember - nobody nails every interview. But each one is a learning curve. The more considered your approach, the better your results.
