When Job Titles Go Wild!

A light-hearted look at why clarity beats cleverness.
At Michelle Denny Recruitment we've seen a fair few job titles over the years – some clear, others that sound more like characters from a Marvel film than a professional role.
Some that stood out...
-Chief Happiness Officer
-Sales Ninja
-Brand Warrior
-People Evangelist
It’s all very creative, but here’s the really important thing – clarity beats cleverness when you’re hiring.

Why job titles matter
A good job title should help people understand what they’re applying for at a glance. It’s the first thing a candidate sees, and often what makes them decide whether to click or scroll on.
When titles get too inventive, they can have the opposite effect – confusing people, deterring great candidates or attracting the wrong ones altogether.
“Happiness Officer” might sound fun, but if the job is really an HR Manager, you’ll get a completely different pool of applicants by saying so.
Standing out doesn’t mean over-the-top
That doesn’t mean you can’t be distinctive. Adding context works brilliantly:
Marketing Manager – Digital Focus
Customer Experience Advisor – Insurance
Office Manager – Family-Run Business
It’s about being clear, specific and honest about what the role involves.
In recruitment, words matter – and a simple, well-chosen title can make all the difference between attracting the right person or missing them entirely.
A final thought
Before posting your next vacancy, take a moment to ask: would someone outside your business instantly know what this job actually is?
If not, it might be time to tone down the “Ninja” and bring back the clarity.
Because the right people don’t need buzzwords – they just need to know where they fit.
